The 2011 Americana Music Association Festival and Conference was a hectic affair. More than 100 bands showcased at five of the city’s best live music clubs as well as the downtown Sheraton Hotel, where the conference’s seminars were held, and in a series of networking events from lunches to a pair of back porch barbecues at Music City’s venerable Grimey’s record and CD store. In addition the event, which ran from October 12-15, celebrated the 10th year of the AMA’s Honors and Awards Ceremony at the historic Ryman Auditorium in a well-paced production that included performances by Robert Plant’s Band of Joy, Lucinda Williams, Gregg Allman, the Avett Brothers, the Civil Wars, Justin Townes Earl, Hayes Carll and many other roots artists.
